The Apple Run/Walk for Diabetes
Held at the Brookfield Orchards on Lincoln Road in North Brookfield, the Apple Run/Walk is organized by the Brookfields' Lions club for the benfit of people afflicted with diabetes. The event has been held annually for 17 years. We are pleased to announce that the Run/Walk will return this year on Saturday October 26!
Runners enjoy a 5 mile scenic course which winds its way along country roads by farms, fields, woods, and a portion of Lake Lashaway. Walkers have the option of the same course or a shorter version of approximately 4.5 miles. Prize money totaling $200 will be given to the top 2 runners in each of the men's and women's fields this year, with other prizes for top finishers in each age category.
All proceeds from the Apple Run/Walk are split between two diabetes recipients: The Clara Barton Camp in Oxford, MA which serves diabetic girls throughout the year for camp enjoyment as well as providing education to best understand and manage their diabetes. Proceeds are also distributed to the diabetic research center at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester. Money raised for these two worthy causes through the first seventeen years of this event has totaled over $37,000.
The date for this year's run/walk will be Saturday, October 26th. Oakholm Brewing of Brookfield will again be onsite pouring their craft brewed beer. The majority of the course was recently paved, and we will again be using 5K Sports Race Managment for our offical timer. Water stations are available along the course.
